The Milton Historical Society undertakes a number of routine projects and hosts a wide variety of events, all in support of the preservation of the history of the Town of Milton.  Details on specific programs are provided on their individual web pages and are summarized as follows:

Plaques:

More than 130 buildings in our community are identified by black and white plaques. We do the research and arrange for production of these historic markers.

Research and Publications:

We have an active publications program. Our newsletter, The Journal, is published several times a year. Hundreds of people have bought our walking tour booklet of historic Milton (updated in 1995).  An illustrated booklet of historic homes has been published and Milton Remembers World War II was released in May 1995. Milton Area Biographies was published in October 1995. A second volume is now available. In 1996 Walking Milton's Main Street in the 1920s was published. A book about P.L. Robertson was published in 1998, the 90th anniversary of the inventor's arrival in Milton.

Meetings:

We have informal and friendly meetings eight to ten times a year (Coffee at 7:30 pm, Meeting at 8:00 pm the third Thursday of the month). Normally we meet in the Waldie Blacksmith Shop but we also have special outings to places of interest.

Research:

Our active research committee pursues local topics. The results take many forms: plaques on historic buildings, talks at our meetings, a walking tour booklet, other publications and slide shows. Whenever possible our researchers answer queries from families near and far about their Milton roots.

Archives:

We protect and preserve documents, photographs, posters, oral history tapes, booklets, articles and other items which reflect the history of Regional Milton. We are digitizing some of our more fragile items, such as the Halton Historical Atlas of 1877 and the Fire Insurance Maps of Milton, 1927. They will be available at this web site very soon. We welcome contributions of historically significant material.

Heritage Week:

Each February our Society and Heritage Milton stage heritage celebrations. We present awards recognizing individual or group contributions to heritage education, writing, visual presentation and architectural preservation. We also mount displays and lead a history walk.

New Year's Day Levee:

Our group works closely with Town Council and the Town staff to organize this event which gives people an opportunity to meet the Mayor and Councillors in an informal and friendly atmosphere.

This traditional gathering is held in the Town Hall, one of Milton's very important historic buildings.

Education:

We help spark student interest in local history. Our program includes historic walks, classroom talks and slide presentations. Our members also speak to adult groups on historical subjects. Our Society provides provincial organizations with information needed so that sites of Ontario-wide interest can be suitably identified.

Cemetery Restoration:

We have a special interest in the Milton Pioneer Cemetery (Bronte St. N.) and have carried out work there in preserving early grave stones.

The photos show the Pioneer Cemetery in1984 prior to the restoration work and then on November 8, 1986 at the unveiling of the plaque and cairn for the restored "Bronte Street Pioneer Cemetery".
